Christopher Harrison was inspired by the style of yoga master BKS Iyengar. The Indian is best known for his physically correct exercise technique. Various aids are used in Iyengar Yoga – for example yoga straps, blocks or cushions.

They make some asanas possible or the health aspect is strengthened. In aerial yoga, the cloth can also be wrapped around the wrist, hips or feet for certain tasks – this allows, for example, the shoulders to be mobilized and the mobility of the pelvis and hips to be trained.

The yoga form is suitable for beginners and beginners. Weak abdominal muscles, tension in the neck, a rounded back or deficits in mobility are no reason not to start with Aerial Yoga, on the contrary. The body only develops according to the stress it is subjected to.

In consultation with a doctor, yogis can even practice selected exercises with intervertebral disc problems. This type of yoga therefore has the potential for physiologically valuable therapy training.

Reversal exercises are also a fixed part of aerial yoga. With them, the head occupies the lowest position of the body. An example of this is the headstand. The yogi can release his body weight through the cloth and engage in the stretching. The spine is relieved, the inner organs are massaged and the deep supporting muscles are strengthened.

Breathing plays an important role in aerial yoga. It should be even and conscious. Yogic Ujjayi breathing is ideal for stretch-intensive exercises. It is one of the most popular yoga breathing techniques. The trachea is contracted, the breath slows down and can be controlled.

  • Anyone who has problems with heart function, low or high blood pressure, general cardiovascular problems or diseases of the vascular system should avoid inversion exercises.
  • Yogis prone to bruising or varicose veins should avoid applying pressure to the tissue with the cloth.
  • Balance exercises should be avoided in the case of inner ear diseases.
  • Those who struggle easily with nausea should also omit inversion exercises.
  • If the knee, shoulder, elbow or wrist are restricted, movements should only be carried out in a small radius or not at all.
  • If you have problems in the finger-hand-arm area, you should avoid all exercises that put a lot of strain on this area.
  • In the case of fresh scars, stretching in the affected area should be avoided.
  • Pregnant women should first clarify with the midwife what is good for them and what is not.

Aerial Yoga is offered in many larger cities in Germany – including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, but also in smaller cities like Freiburg. There are also various organizers who organize aerial yoga retreats all over the world.
