Dandruff is a nuisance, especially when it gets stuck on dark-colored clothing. In most cases, however, they are harmless and a cosmetic concern. Read here what helps against dandruff, how to prevent it and when you should see a doctor.

What helps against dandruff?

Everyone has dandruff. They are small particles of skin that the body sheds when producing new scalp. As a rule, they are not visible to the eye. However, around 30 percent of women and 20 percent of men suffer from severe scaling at least temporarily. This is often annoying and unaesthetic. Especially when the light skin particles stick to dark clothing or shimmer on dark hair.

There are various reasons behind it: Incorrect care, aggressive styling products, direct sunlight or heating air lead to dry, white dandruff, among other things. Larger, oily scales, on the other hand, are often caused by a yeast fungus. A greasy scalp is typical.

Some people have an inherent predisposition to scaly skin . But diseases such as psoriasis or neurodermatitis are also a reason that someone suddenly has to struggle with the skin particles. In these cases, it is important to see a doctor.

Depending on what the trigger is, there are different ways to deal with dandruff. We introduce them.

The right care

If you suffer from dry and trickling dandruff, wash your hair as seldom as possible or adjust your care products to dry skin and hair.

Before washing, brush or comb your hair gently, but always thoroughly. The longer you rinse your hair when washing, the more dandruff will go away. Above all, however, it is important for a dry scalp: The temperature of the water should only be lukewarm – this also applies later to the hair dryer. Otherwise your scalp will dry out even more.

The following also applies to greasy scalps: Daily hair washing, hot blow-drying and drying shampoos are unfavourable. The reason: They promote the sebum production of the scalp.

Anti-dandruff shampoos for greasy dandruff

If a fungal disease is behind the dandruff, it often helps to wash the hair with a special anti-fungal shampoo from the pharmacy. They contain antifungal substances such as ketoconazole and bifonazole. These deprive the yeast of its livelihood. In order for the funds to develop their full effect, they should act for between three and five minutes.

However, anti-dandruff shampoos are not suitable for everyday use. Do not use the special products more than three times a week – and not for more than a month. If you feel an improvement, gradually use the anti-dandruff shampoo less often.

Be careful with anti-dandruff shampoos if you have dry dandruff. They often further dry out the scalp and thus have the opposite effect.

The correct use of care and styling products

For dry dandruff, mild products such as baby shampoos are suitable for daily use. Keep the exposure time of the shampoo short so that the scalp is not unnecessarily stressed.

The wrong styling products irritate the scalp. These include, above all, gels, hairspray, foam or aggressive shampoos and conditioners. Therefore, use only a few products and make sure they are gentle on the scalp.

If the sun’s rays are too strong, protect your scalp. This can be done, for example, with a hat, a scarf or a fabric cap. If shade is nearby, you better go there.

A balanced diet is good for our skin, and this also applies to the scalp. Be sure to get your vitamins A and vitamin E on a regular basis. They are found, for example, in carrots, kale, olive oil or sardines.

Biotin is also important. The so-called beauty vitamin H is found in peanuts, oatmeal and yeast. Zinc also has a positive effect on the skin. The trace element is contained in beans, cocoa and nuts.

Avoid sugar, coffee, chocolate and alcohol. They provide food for the microorganisms. A high-fat diet is also unfavorable, as it stimulates the skin’s sebum production. It is better to use unsaturated fatty acids, such as those found in seeds, nuts or avocados.

Home remedies for dandruff

There are several home remedies that you can use to treat wet dandruff. However, there is no scientific confirmation of effective effects.

Teebaumöl

Because tea tree oil has powerful antifungal properties, it helps fight oily dandruff. Add one to four drops of tea tree essential oil to a mild shampoo.

Apple Cider Vinegar

For an apple cider vinegar hair tonic, mix together 1/2 cup each of apple cider vinegar and distilled water . Massage this hair tonic well into the scalp between hair washes. It promotes blood circulation.

Thymian

Thyme horsetail rinses inhibit the production of fat in the sebaceous glands and also have an anti-inflammatory effect. To do this, pour 100 milliliters of boiling water over a teaspoon each of thyme , horsetail and rosemary and add some apple cider vinegar. Apply this tincture after washing your hair, massage it in and don’t wash it out!

Our skin renews itself every four weeks. Old, dead horny cells are therefore shed. They migrate from the depths to the surface. If this process is normal, we don’t even notice it. However, when it is disrupted and the skin sheds the cells too quickly, they clump together.

When hundreds or thousands of these particles stick together, we see them as scales. This often manifests itself in an itchy scalp. There are two different types of dandruff that have different causes.

External factors are primarily responsible for the dry, white scales. This includes heating air, drying shampoos and care products. In addition, hot blow-drying and a dry climate cause the scalp to be irritated. But even those who suffer from psoriasis (psoriasis vulgaris) are often affected.

Greasy scales

Yellow, greasy dandruff occurs because of increased sebum production. This type of scale is larger than the dry one and often feels oily and sticky. The scalp is often red, has weeping spots and itches.

The trigger in many cases is the yeast Malassezia Furfur. Although it is also part of the normal skin flora, it multiplies quickly under favorable conditions. Men are more likely to be affected by greasy dandruff because they tend to have a greasy scalp overall. People with a weakened immune system and diabetes are also more susceptible to it.

How to prevent dandruff!

If you pay attention to various things in everyday life, you can prevent dry dandruff in particular.

  • Avoid washing or blow drying your hair at too high a temperature. This strains the scalp and dries it out.
  • Think carefully about which hair care products you actually need. Hair gel and foam, for example, close the scalp – which is conducive to dandruff formation.
  • In winter, you should regularly air or humidify the rooms in which you spend a lot of time.

When to the doctor?

Dandruff is mostly a cosmetic problem and harmless. However, if nothing changes after a few weeks despite using anti-dandruff shampoos, changed care routines or home remedies, or if your skin is itchy or inflamed, see a doctor. If children suffer from dandruff, it is always advisable to see a doctor.
