Sufficient daylight

It is important that the room in which your workplace is located receives a sufficient amount of daylight. This is much more pleasant than lighting exclusively with artificial light. The incidence of light can come through windows, skylights and translucent components.

The right light level

Occupational physicians recommend a light intensity of around 500 lux (at the level of the desk surface) in the home office and in offices for one or more people. In open-plan offices, the illuminance should be between 750 and 1000 lux. You can determine the illuminance with a commercially available lux meter.

It is important that you can adjust the lighting at your workplace individually, for example with desk lamps. Contrasts that are too strong, too many or too few shadows can be avoided by uniform luminance.

Brightness contrasts of more than 1:3 in the closer field of vision and 1:10 in the field of vision are also taboo. The recommended luminosity is a compromise, since a VDU workstation has two opposing lighting requirements: strong light for reading, weak light for working on the VDU. And if the light is too bright, you can hardly see anything on the screen.

Ensure good lighting conditions

Even if many people feel more comfortable in a workplace with a view of the outside – daylight alone is not enough to illuminate a VDU workplace. The lighting conditions fluctuate too much, glare and reflections can occur. Windows must be able to be darkened against direct sunlight, ideally with slatted curtains or blinds. The incidence of light can thus be better controlled. The lighting must also not flicker or flicker.

Avoid reflections

Any shiny surface can reflect light, causing reflections or glare. Of course, these reflections are particularly annoying on the screen, which should therefore never be placed facing the window. However, you should also avoid positioning the screen in such a way that you have to face the window.

When choosing the office furnishings, make sure that the furniture in your field of vision – for example your colleagues’ desks or the display case in your study at home – does not have any shiny surfaces. Glass cupboard doors, decorative mirrors and the like must not cause any disturbances, even at the edge of the field of vision. The lights on the ceiling should have grids to reduce disruptive influences.

Place lights correctly

With the right choice and placement of the lights, favorable lighting conditions can be created in the office or in the study. It is best to place the lights in the line of sight. The workplace should be evenly lit.

Important in the office with several people: Discuss the lighting together. Sensitivity to light varies from person to person and also decreases with age. Readjust the lights if you feel the light is doing more to bother you than help you while you are working.
