Stress factors (stressors) are all internal and external stimuli that trigger a stress reaction in the body . This is supposed to protect people, but it can also make you sick. Find out here which are the most common stress factors in our society today and why some people react more stressed than others!

How do I recognize stress factors?

Whether an environmental stimulus triggers a stress reaction is subjective – i.e. different for every person. Some people react stressed to things that others remain completely relaxed about. Personal attitudes, learned behavioral patterns, emotions and even inherited factors play a role here. The classification “stress factor or not” occurs very quickly and therefore does not always appear logical.

According to the current state of knowledge, stress factors trigger the following diseases:

  • Back pain and other muscular tension
  • frequent colds due to a weakening of the immune system
  • headaches , migraines and tinnitus
  • gastric and intestinal ulcers
  • disturbed reproduction and sexual displeasure
  • alcohol and drug abuse
  • mental illnesses such as panic attacks and depression
  • Calcification of the coronary arteries (with a heart attack as a possible consequence)
  • Burnout

How does stress arise?

People hear, see, smell and taste something all the time. With the help of various nerves, it perceives the stimuli from its environment, which are then processed by the brain . Depending on previous experiences stored in memory, some stimuli are perceived as pleasant and others as unpleasant. In the second case, the stimulus in question is a stress factor.

An example: Most people associate the sound of the sea with holidays and beautiful landscapes. Anyone who hears it relaxes. A loud jackhammer noise, on the other hand, means disruption – the body classifies the stimulus accordingly as a stress factor.
